Warnham CE Primary School Newsletter
January 2019

Dear Parents and Carers,

Happy New Year!

I hope that you all had a happy Christmas and managed to fit in a little bit of rest, where possible.

Our New Year has started positively. The children are all very enthusiastic and we have welcomed some new children into Hedgehogs, Otters, Foxes and Badgers already this term.

You may have seen on Twitter that we received a letter from the House of Commons congratulating us on our significantly improved attainment in one year – this has certainly given us all a spring in our step as we move from strength to strength.

Some of our neighbours have become upset when they feel that their home/space is not respected by parents parking in front of their drive.

Please do not park in front of driveways or on the yellow zigzag lines because this compromises the safety of our children.

Parent Forum

I am looking for two parent/carer representatives per class to join a parent forum/PTFA.

This is in order to gain parent ideas and perspectives as we plan ahead with both school improvement and fun/enriching activities for the children.

Please let me know if this interests you.

Chilly Weather

Children are coming in well wrapped-up, which is great as we try to allow children out in all weathers, if safe to do so.

For PE we use the school hall for gymnastics, dance etc. but still go out for invasion games. Some children are a little chilly in their shorts; T-shirt and a jumper so please feel free to add a tracksuit to their PE bag.

We have had a couple of tiny flurries of snow in Horsham and hopefully that will be the extent of it, this Winter.

However, if we should experience snow, you will be kept up-to-date via parentmail and if we are able to safely open despite conditions and if we have enough staff then we will always do so.

If your child would like to play on the field at lunch/break times, please send in a pair of named wellies from Monday 4th February.

Wrap Around Care

Thank you for completing our survey on ‘wrap around care’ for children, it seems as if many parents would be keen on this provision, so we are busily exploring logistics and possibilities.

I’m afraid that we don’t have a start date for you as yet, but the school is working hard to keep costs as low as possible.

Toys and Valuables

As you know, children are discouraged to bring toys and valuables into school as we have plenty of play equipment for them .

Please could you remind children of this as we have found children with a £20 note, an iPhone and bags of coins in one class alone!

Sometimes children bring a special item in for ‘show and tell’ but generally, please could they leave things at home?

I am sure that you are very aware of the funding crisis that is deeply affecting all schools across the UK.  We are very fortunate to have Jules White within our West Horsham locality so I hope that you appreciate being kept up-to-date, regarding your child’s education and funding for schools.

A petition has been put forward in order to ensure discussions in parliament surrounding school funding. Please feel free to follow the link below to learn more:

Whilst on the subject, if you could check your Key Stage 2 child’s pencil case for their own white board pens and gluesticks – as these are beginning to run out. Thank you.

Parent Training

If you are interested, I received an email the other day about some free/very cheap training for parents and carers, if you would like to follow the link below:

In addition to this, if you have a child with additional learning needs and need to know more about the assessment processes, have help with the ‘parent booklet’ or if your child is being considered for an EHCP, you can meet with someone from WSCC, if you email: Sharon.smith@westsussex.gov.uk

Parent’s Evening

This is going to be held on:

Wednesday 20th March between 3:30pm and 6pm

Thursday 21st March between 5pm and 7:30pm

This Parent’s Evening we are trialling a smoother system (hopefully), especially for parents of more than one child at Warnham.  Class teachers will all be stationed in the school hall for you to easily move about for your appointments.

To reduce waiting times for parents, a bell will be rung every 10 minutes to indicate the start of the next appointment.

The appointments are to share progress information with parents but please feel free to make an additional appointment if you need to discuss something in more detail. Miss Gordon (Special Needs Co-Ordinator) will also be available for appointments.  We will inform you, via parentmail, as soon as the booking system is live.

Staff Training

We have been working hard with our local schools to provide innovative and up-to-date training for staff.

This includes working with children with a variety of special needs, learning more about assessment of pupils and how we can use this skilfully to move children on in their learning.

Many teachers and TAs have interests in mental health and have been spending their own time researching this further and gaining additional qualifications.

Miss Main and Mrs Fisher were really inspired by a course in metacognition and cognitive load which, in short, provides teachers with a more detailed understanding of the psychology behind learning and children taking more responsibility for their own learning.

We are so fortunate to have such an energetic teaching team who are just as keen to learn as they are to teach.

Mrs S Kirby
