Dear Parents and Carers,

Library project

We are so excited to see our new library plans beginning to take shape. The new library will be decorated, carpeted and fitted throughout the Summer holidays to be ready for the children to enjoy in September.

It will be a place where children can explore, relax and develop a further love of reading.

Thank you so much for your help in raising the necessary funds for this – the children will LOVE it.

Safeguarding

Last week a Year 1 child was very nearly knocked over by a car on his way to school.

The child thought that he was walking around a car parked on the zigzag lines and didn’t hear the car almost reverse into him.

Thankfully, he was only shaken and not hurt but PLEASE can we all ensure that drivers park safely?

We would always rather that your child was 2 minutes late than risk a child being hurt or worse; they are all so precious to us.

International

We have been awarded the ‘FairAware Award’ in recognition of our work in supporting Fairtrade. A huge thank you to the Fairtrade Group and for all of your help with the Fairtrade Bake Sale where we raised £50 for Fairtrade.

The International Food Tasting Morning was a huge success!  The children were lucky enough to try food from all over the world.

A huge thank you for all of your food donations and to those of you who stayed to help. We must also give an enormous thank you to Mrs Curtis for working tirelessly in helping our children become more internationally aware.

Sport

Warnham pupils enjoyed a range of sports this year, playing other schools at Cricket, Rugby, Football, Badminton, Netball, Cross Country, Athletics, Rounders, Basketball, Street Sports and Country Dancing.

This year we enjoyed particular success at Netball with our fantastic Year 6 High 5s team.  Our Dance team put on an amazing performance at the Capitol in Horsham.

Year 2 took part in a whole day of multisports, giving them the opportunity to try, cycling, wheelchair football, archery, table tennis, circus skills, athletics and dance.

Sporting success at Athletics was also visible at Quad Kids where children competed well as a team with some outstanding individual results.

Year 5 & 6 also completed 6 weeks of cricket coaching with an external cricket coach as part of their PE lessons which paid off in our recent match against other local primary schools beating 4 other teams to come 3rd!

Please do look at the sports board in the sports hall for photos of all of the events.

Most matches have been for Years 3/4 and 5/6 but we are very fortunate in Horsham that competition is also encouraged for children trying a sport for the first time.

This approach has allowed our keen sports people to compete against other schools along with our more tentative athletes to ‘have a go’ in specially designed matches.

We are very proud of how active Warnham children are and how they are so keen to represent the school against tough competition.

School Development

In 2019-2020 we are focussing closely on our school vision and values. As a staff, with Governors, children and parents we are planning to have another look at our whole-school vision and what is most important to us as a learning community.

We will then look, in detail, at which Christian values are most important to us in helping our children to develop into kind, hard-working teenagers and adults. As a staff we are also in the process of delving into our curriculum offer to ensure that topics are informative, creative, fun and effective in developing learning.

Writing in Key Stage 2 is still an academic focus and we are working hard to help children develop their spelling skills as this is the area holding them back the most in terms of reaching age related expectations in writing. A busy but exciting and creative time ahead!

Loving Learning

We are so fortunate that our adults love learning as much as they love teaching so the expertise is growing enormously at Warnham. Our adults have been learning all about:

Learning Mentor training, Higher Level Teaching Assistant training, Early Years observations and assessment, Mindfulness, Global Citizenship, Down’s Syndrome behaviour/supporting learning, Speech/language, Attention Autism, Maths resources learning (Numicon), Child Psychology, Play Therapy, Metacognition and the Cognitive Load, Attachment Awareness, Improving the Performance of disadvantaged pupils and so much more. What a wonderfully committed bunch of grown-ups!

Support for Parents

I am not sure that I have ever met a parent that hasn’t needed some support at some point in their life.

We are very fortunate in Horsham to have ‘Horsham Hub’ which is designed to support parents and families during difficult times or to support parents in communicating with their children.

Flyers will be sent out to all families for you to make use of this service or you can contact them for more details on: 07525211177 or HorshamHUB@westsussex.gov.uk.

Governor Spotlight

After chatting with Governors, we felt that you may not know a great deal about them – other than their support in leading the school.
Two Governors have written a ‘Governor Spotlight’ so that you can learn a little more about them.

Gytha Hodgson

I am the Local Authority appointed Governor and have served on the Governing Body for 10 years.  It has been a huge privilege to see how the school has grown and thrived during this period, culminating in our last OFSTED inspection. To have achieved a Good overall with Outstanding for our Early Years provision has really delighted me and my fellow governors and we are deeply indebted to Mrs Kirby and her wonderful team for all their hard work and commitment.

My eldest two children attended Warnham CE Primary in the 80’s. What a different place the school is now!

I am now looking forward to my grandchildren attending the school in due course.  I have 3 grandsons and together with my two Labradors and garden keep me busy. My hobbies include cooking, tennis, needlepoint and knitting and thoroughly enjoy reading.

Alex Hill

I have always loved the close relationship Warnham Primary has with the rest of the village, in particular the church.

Even before I had children I knew it was the sort of school I would like to send my kids to and was delighted when my daughter got her place.

Having been a Governor for 2 years now, I really appreciate all the hard work that goes on to make the school fantastic and the constant drive that is made to further improve it.

I have two daughters, aged 5 and 2 and work as a PE teacher.

From September I will be a housemistress in charge of 55 teenage girls which I maintain is still easier than a class of 30 primary school children!

Planning ahead – Pilgrimage to the Holy Land, February 2021

Have you ever thought of visiting the Holy Land?

Imagined what it would be like to sail on Lake Galilee, swim in the Dead Sea, see the city of Jerusalem, Herod’s fortification of Masada, the Mount of Olives or Bethlehem?

Well, now could be your chance. All parents and staff are invited to join our ‘school church’ of St. Margaret’s Warnham, on a Pilgrimage to the Holy Land, 2nd – 11th February 2021, ten days based in Jerusalem and by Lake Galilee.

Whatever your personal belief, there is nothing like being in the locations of the narratives of the Bible, to bring them to life and generate new insights and understanding: antiquity, history and faith in spades; but perhaps unusually for us, blended with tourism and juxtaposed with the context of our own present day.

If you are interested in finding out more, please email Jules the Vicar on julesbarnes17@gmail.com for a brochure.

Doing this commits you to absolutely nothing at all, but the information you then receive will tell you all about the itinerary and also how to book, should you wish to. The all-inclusive cost is £1,885 per person.
